Unframed oil on board (16 x 20 inches, when unframed)
This painting is a celebration of Dame Judi Dench and the things that are important to her. The setting is the historic city of York.
Dame Judi is surrounded by Shakespeare's works; on the shelf there is also a paintbrush, symbolizing her love of art. Behind these are the remains of the chapel walls in the museum gardens, where the York Mystery Plays are held.
In the far distance, we see York Minster and The York Theatre Royal, where Dame Judi watched the pantomime performances as a child. In the sky is a star, which symbolises the Quaker faith. Finally, I've included a reveal in this painting, which shows Shakespeare's text, drawn from Dame Judi's early performances.
