Antony and Cleopatra
Antony and Cleopatra

Unframed oil on board (19 x 24 inches, when unframed)

In this painting we see the Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra, gazing into a looking glass. As she looks upon her reflection, she imagines how Marc Antony would react to her death, seeing the lack of sorrow at the death of his current wife, Fulvia.

Cleopatra to Antony (Act 1, Scene 3)
O, most false love!
Where be the sacred vials thou shouldst fill
With sorrowful water? Now I see, I see,
In Fulvia’s death, how mine received shall be.

In the background we see the pyramid of one of her ancestors, an indicator of her great power and ancestry. The background is painted monochromatically so that it allows the figure of Cleopatra to dominate the scene. Cleopatra is played by the beautiful French Operatic Soprano of the 1960-70s, Ariel Daunizeau. Who sadly passed away in the 1990’s. The use of her photographic image is granted by her loving son, Emmanuel Daunizeau. Emmanuel has taken a keen interest in our Visual Shakespeare Project.
