In this painting we see Lucrece in the centre of the composition; she is fearful. A mirror, behind her, allows us to see what she sees. The mirror has captured both her reflection and that of her attacker, Tarquin, who is standing in a doorway in front of her. The painting does not portray the violence of her attacker, but rather, the tragic aftermath. Tarquin takes one last look at Lucrece as he leaves. His cruel and violent actions will lead to the suicide of Lucrece, who has been further threatened by Tarquin; she will be murdered along with a slave in a sexually compromised state if she exposes Tarquin's heinous crime. She ultimately kills herself rather than live with the shame, though she is clearly blameless.
Chiaroscuro is used in this painting to bathe Lucrece in the purity of light. In contrast, Tarquin lurks in the shadows.
Lucrece is played by the beautiful and talented actor, Chelsea LeSage from New York.
